The
Witness Project® of Connecticut accomplishes its outreach and education work through
the format of sessions similar to religious witnessing:
|
- Breast cancer survivors testify to their own experiences,
including how they overcame barriers and myths about cancer, providing messages
of inspiration and empowerment.
- Conducted among women in churches
and community settings
The purpose of the Witness Session is to address the fears
and false beliefs many women hold about cancer;to provide participants with accurate
information about breast and cervical cancer, early detection,
|
|
|
and
treatment methods, and to increase the practice of regular breast self-examination
(BSE), clinical breast exam (CBE), mammography screening, and pap test screening.
Trained volunteer survivors, called Witness Role Models (WRMs)
and trained volunteer health counselors, called Lay Health Advisors
(LHAs) work in teams to provide their sisters with culturally-competent, accurate,
sensitive information.
